Room Parents at ASFS: What to Expect (It's Less Than You Think)
Room parents are one of the most meaningful ways to get involved at ASFS — and one of the most misunderstood roles by new families. The role is not about being in the classroom constantly and does not require a huge time commitment. Most weeks, it's a few WhatsApp messages. For 4-5 bigger events through the year, it involves coordination that can be done virtually.
What IS a room parent?
A room parent is a liaison between the classroom teacher and the families in that homeroom. You help families stay connected to each other and to what's happening in the classroom — and you communicate what families need to bring or sign up for around a handful of events throughout the year.

What does it actually look like week to week?
Most weeks, you might send one or two messages in your class WhatsApp group — a reminder about an upcoming dress-up day or a heads-up about a volunteer sign-up. You are not expected to be in the classroom.
Simply connecting room families with each other goes a long way toward building community. A homeroom WhatsApp group becomes a natural place to coordinate class moments throughout the year, like finding each other at Movie Night or organizing a park meetup on a day that school is closed.
Your responsibilities throughout the year
Class parties. Room parents help coordinate class celebrations for Halloween, Winter Holiday, Valentine's Day, and (sometimes) End of Year. The teacher sets the tone, determines activities, and decides whether parent volunteers are needed. You communicate what families need to bring or sign up via a SignUpGenius (PTA templates available). Room parents are not responsible for providing party food / supplies. Just for communicating the needs between the teacher & families.
Teacher gift collections. Room parents may organize a class gift at winter holidays and at the end of the school year. All contributions are completely voluntary — this is not a PTA-sponsored fundraiser. Any gift should always be presented as being from the whole class, regardless of how many families contributed. And if the collection falls short? That's okay. Room parents are not expected to cover any gap themselves.
Great Artist Program. The PTA runs an art enrichment program in classrooms throughout the year. Your role is to communicate opportunities for parent volunteers when your teacher requests it — you are not expected to lead the sessions yourself.
